This instrument is a magnificent example of an original Victorian "art case" piano. Heavily carved, ornate rosewood cabinetry and the detailed lattice music desk is typical of "Second Empire Victorian" architecture and artistry, popular from 1855 to 1885.

Hardman was established in 1842 by Hugh Hardman in New York, NY. Hugh's brother John joined the company in 1874 and Leopold Peck became a partner in 1890. In 1890 the name was changed to Hardman, Peck & Co. Hardman was considered one of the distinguished piano industries of this era, with a worldwide reputation for the utmost in reliability. Hardman pianos were noted for their technical qualities, for their purity, delicacy, the artistic beauty of their cases, and for their remarkable durability. Hardman pianos were once the official piano of the Metropolitan Opera Company in New York.

This piano has enormous investment potential, as pianos both of this vintage calibre and restored condition are extremely rare in North America.

In 1980 this instrument was completely restored, including:

- Cabinet refinished to its original beauty
- Keytops replaced
- Original soundboard and bridges repaired and refinished
- Pinblock replaced, piano re-strung with new tuning pins
- New hammers and dampers installed
- Original action parts reconditioned or replaced only where beneficial
- All Felts replaced

The piano has had minimal use, with little or no wear evident on either
the hammer / damper felts or other moving parts.
