This is one of three existing instruments by the inventor Cristofori, keeper of musical instruments for the Medici Court in Florence. His revolutionary invention was described as a "gravicembalo col piano e forte", or "harpsichord with soft and loud". This later was reduced to "pianoforte",
then "fortepiano", and finally just "piano".
