Hampton L. Story began as a piano retailer in 1857 when he purchased a music store in Burlington,
Vermont. In 1862 he was joined by Mr. Powers to form Story & Powers. In 1867 Story was offered an organ
dealership for the western states by Jacob Estey and he set up shop in Chicago. Isaac Camp then joined
Story about the late 1860s, forming the firm of Story & Camp. In 1884 Hampton L. Story left Story & Camp
and was joined by his son, Edward H. Story and Melville Clark to form the company of Story & Clark. They
began manufacturing reed organs until 1895 when they began making pianos. The company discontinued
building organs in the early 1900s in favor of concentrating their efforts on piano and player piano
manufacturing. By 1901 the business moved to Grand Haven, Michigan (where it remained until about
1985, under several different owners). They started using a Chas. Frederick Stein scale since about 1970
(to 1984) when they were owned by Lowrey, a division of Norlin Industries. Yamaha made some grand
pianos for Story & Clark in Japan, in the late 1960s to 1970s. Over the years, brand names controlled
included: Story & Clark, Classic, Hampton, Hobart M. Cable, Irvington, Packard, Price & Teeple,
Storygrand, Storytone, and Tennyson. The Story & Clark name was then purchased in 1991 by the
Classic Player Piano Co., and then by QRS Piano Music Technologies in 1993 where Story & Clark pianos
were manufactured in Seneca, Pennsylvania. In 2002 pianos ceased to be manufactured in the U.S.A.
Pianos bearing the Story & Clark name were then made in China by the Dongbei piano company;
and then in Indonesia by the Samick Music Corporation beginning in 2008, for QRS Piano Music
Technologies in the U.S.A. By 2012 various Asian manufacturers made Story & Clark pianos for QRS.
